Making up my mind..

I often find it hard to make up my mind. This also affects my photography.. until this day I haven't decided what type of photography I prefer (which might not be the type at which I do best). I like macro photography (but I don't have a macro lens), I love portraits (but I don't think I'm good at them), and I love nature and animals.

A while ago vintage/retro photography got really really popular again. Even before everyone started using Apples Instagram. And I can't help but love the nostalgic, colourful, expressive retro photographs 'of the past', although they are very different from the high qualitative, natural images that are preferably not edited. So I'm balancing again, this time between natural images and heavily edited ones. I like them both, I'm tempted to go for retro but then again I don't think adding some textures and filters is much of a skill. I don't want to trivialize anyones efforts and inspiration, but that's what it comes down to for me, in most cases. Trying out the cool stuff that photo-hosting websites and simple editing programs offer. I can't be proud of that can I?

Maybe it's not a bad thing to have changing interests and to be inspired by different things all the time. Maybe I have to accept that I might not ever make up my mind, and keep doing the things I want when I want them. Maybe that's why I stopped taking pictures all together for a while. Just because I didn't feel like it. And when I started to miss it, I picked up my camera again.

Hey Nanieke,

first of all: You`re not balancin`alone ; ) To me it`s like a déja-vu readin` those lines reflectin`proper doubts and efforts concernin` photography. But may I tell You: That`s the way it is - as long as You are passionate with an item. You might transfer this idea on meta-level to any other sujet ... see?
The good thing: You`re on the way to improve, there`s something burnin`inside longin`for creative birth, sometimes liftin`you up sometimes drivin` You down. As a scientist You know: Life is a summary of impacts and waves. So is the process of creation. If You don`t mind one simple little hint summin`it up in a poetic way: Aim high, dig deep, work hard and above all have fun.
Regards
Enrico
PS: Your portraits deserve to be continued ; )
